Age four, my favorite chicken, Old One-Eye, was gone. I asked, Don’t you miss him? The others cackled and beaked. Great Aunt Bert chuckled, said she’d wrung his neck for our supper. And hadn’t he tasted good? Profound shame in realizing chicken meant those warm beings and food in my belly.
